Four great writing craft books

I read a lot of writing craft books.

I know there are people who say that you should just  write and read a lot if you want to become a writer and I guess that's not entirely bad advice, but I think of a writing craft book as someone who's learned the tricks of the trade and is giving  advice. I'm always ready to learn so it's never been a problem for me to accept advice.

 On Writing” by Stephen King
this is a real cool book because Stephen King is showing his process. It's a bit like the way you're always told to show and not tell when you write fiction and it's what King achieves in this book.

He gives advice as he's recalls parts of his life and it's kind of a mix of reflection and realization and practical advice. It's kind of what you do when you write fiction, show ongoing action through a character's memories and his or her motivations and goals.

“Getting Into Character: Seven Secrets A Novelist Can Learn From Actors” by Brandilyn Collins
I like digging into character psychology when I write so this has been one of the best books to give me practical tips on how to get inside characters' heads.

Whenever I'm stuck, in writers block mode this is the thing that breaks me free. I basically try to become the character, the way that actors do when they become the characters they play

Self-Editing for Fiction Writers” by Renni Browne and Dave King
There are a lot of great writers who say writing is just editing. For that reason I love this book because here are two great editors who break down how you should be looking at your story. After you get down the basic elements of your story these two writers show you how to improve it and add polish and professional flair.

“The Sense of Style: The Thinking Person’s Guide to Writing in the 21st Century” by Steven Pinker
Steven Pinker in keeping with an editor's role mentioned above to point out that the most important element of your writing is clarity.

Steven Pinker really breaks down the elements of clear prose writing and the idea that clear writing should become part of your fiction writing because I think it's mostly about communication.

People should be able to read what you're saying without having to think twice.

I could go on to describe lots of other books but these four books have been really helpful for me I hope they help you to.
